A Beginners Guide to Color with Jessica

For some people, using bright hues in the home can be a daunting task. Where should you start? We asked our color-loving Lead Stylist Jessica to give us some tips on how to add ease in to a colorful home!

Q: Feeling overwhelmed with color? Here is a good place to start:

A: I think we often gravitate toward colors that we look and feel good in. An approachable place to start adding color in would be thinking about the colors in which you dress yourself and then adding those into your interior spaces.

Q: Are you team white walls or color walls?

A: I’m on both teams here. It really depends on my desired style or mood for the space. The blank canvas of a white wall allows for other interior finishes and furniture to really stand out. It’s totally cliche, but colorful walls can evoke an emotional response and add so much personality! I think we often gravitate toward colors that we look and feel good in. Q: When should I be using trendy vs timeless colors?

A: I don’t think you should ever do something just because it’s trendy. With that being said, I do think trying out different styles and drawing inspiration from popular trends is great, as long as it aligns with your own authenticity. I believe that the best design is always a balance of the up to date and the tried and true.

Q: What’s your favorite color to incorporate into your home & why?

A: Orange and green. Not ironically, these are two colors that can be found in my closet! I’m a sunset connoisseur and a lover of the 70s, so I’m sure this has something to do with my love for the color orange. I’ve always felt that if my soul had a color, it would be green, like the fuzzy lichen on trees in the forest. I have many green plants in my space, so there are touches of green in each room.

Q: What’s the easiest way to incorporate color in the home?

A: I think what scares a lot of people away from color is that often when we think of color, we think of vibrancy. You don’t have to incorporate vibrant color. Muted colors, like a dusty mauve or sage green, are just as useful. If you are unsure of how to use color, one of the safest ways to do so is with art and plants! With a colorful print or painting on the wall, your furniture can remain neutral. Plants can provide colorful blooms that will come and go with the seasons, so they’re a low-risk color investment.
